Transformation in the Food Industry due to the Pandemic

Covid-19 has changed the view and perspective of every human and industry towards life in general. Many practices that were in vogue before the pandemic have given away to new procedures and methods. It has been the same in the case of food industry as well.

This century saw many trends in the food industry. Few of them include the growing demand for organic food or different food diets or trends like Vegan diet or Keto diet. These food trends before the pandemic were the consumer choices. However, post the pandemic, practices for survival of humans became critical. Coronavirus has changed everything about food, due to which the food industry is likely to see a transformation in trading as well as eating habits and practices.

Last year we saw a growing trend of plant-based eating. This was because consumers became more aware about the multiple health conditions associated with a meat-based diet. The food industry started adapting the concept of mock meat and meat alternatives. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, people have in fact begun to think how they consume food. The thinking involves getting to know more about how their food is sourced, made & finally delivered to their local markets or homes.

Many chef-driven fine dining restaurants which were earlier focused on providing customers a dining-in experience, have ventured into the food delivery business. In the long term this will completely change the landscape of the food delivery business in the world. The shift towards vegan & organic food were present in the food sector before the pandemic. But with Covid-19 taking the globe by storm, this trend will soon become a lifestyle for many consumers. People will be more conscious about the food they eat and this market will see a rise in “vegan only” or “organic only” brands.

Another trend that has been seen is the decline in street food due to concerns regarding hygiene and cleanliness. On the contrary, this will give opportunities for many gourmet street food brands to provide food with great taste coupled with hygiene and convenience of delivery. We can also see people opting for having gourmet meal at home experiences due to the safety concerns of Covid-19 or the fear of another outbreak. Hence there will be more and more F&B brands providing “At Home” experiences.
