Rice is major cash crop. Many countries import and export Rice. It has been the staple food in majority of countries around the world. In fact, Rice is used to make many delicacies. Hence, it is always in demand in the international market. Rice cultivation was first started by the Chinese. It then slowly spread across Asia and Southeast Asia. Europe soon followed it. India
India is ideal for rice cultivation and is the largest exporting producing country in the world. It has vast stretches of land, seasonal changes and annual rainfall, which makes it appropriate for rice cultivation. India has nearly 3000 varieties of rice. Basmati rice is the most popular rice variety. It is cultivated only in the Indian subcontinent. Vietnam
Vietnam’s top exporting commodity is its rice. Nearly 18% of the 17 Million people in Vietnam produce rice. A major region associated with rice production is Mekong Delta. This region is also known as the “Rice Bowl” of the country. Rice is a major source of revenue in Vietnam which is earned by exporting rice to foreign countries. In 2021/22, Vietnam exported 6.5 million metric tons.
Thailand
Thailand has a strong tradition of rice production. It has the fifth-largest amount of land under rice cultivation in the world and is the world’s second largest exporter of rice along with Vietnam. In 2021/22, Thailand also exported 6.5 million metric tons. Thailand has plans to further increase the land available for rice production, with a goal of adding 500,000 hectares (1,200,000 acres) to its already 9.2 million hectares (23 million acres) of rice-growing areas. In fact, almost half of Thailand’s cultivated land is devoted to rice.
